The Academy of Natural Sciences

Thursday, January 29

During our short stay downtown, we spent a few hours wandering around The Academy of Natural Sciences - that was my only real requirement for the whole trip... I wanted to see some dinosaurs! The museum is actually quite small and aside from their dinosaur hall, they also have dioramas and a butterfly exhibit. We were also lucky enough to catch the Chocolate exhibit right before it closed. (Unfortunately, no photos were allowed in there, but they had some really neat old chocolate wrappers and tins!) Although I came for the dinosaurs, the butterflies were the highlight of the visit for me. One of the guides in the exhibit was super enthusiastic and talked to Shawn and I for at least fifteen minutes. He pulled out some dead butterflies for us to hold and showed us how the live ones get shipped there - we even got to hold a cocoon!

There was also an exhibit showcasing a few pieces by Caryn Babaian - she does amazing chalk artwork and you should check it out if you're in the area!

Philly Staycation Snippets

Wednesday, January 28

Pork sandwiches at DiNic's; sat next to two men who have been going there for over 25 years.

Walked around historic Philly; this time of year everything is pretty much closed though.

Got a drink (or two) at Mac's Tavern. (Any It's Always Sunny fans here?)

Had to take advantage of the huge mirror in the hotel room... especially on a good hair day.

Speaking of the hotel, the bath products were on point.

As was the breakfast of your choosing that is conveniently delivered to your room.

It's not always sunny in Philly... though this photo begs to differ.

Of course we had to stop at Tria Taproom, as anyone who knows me knows.

Picked up a few records while we were downtown. The Pure Moods one is a fluke; not what I was expecting.

And that was our short stay in Philadelphia! (Along with a museum stop, which you'll get to see photos of tomorrow.) Shawn hurt his knee before we left so we didn't do nearly as much walking as I had plotted out. And because I unknowingly booked our stay during restaurant week, a lot of places were consistently packed so we stuck to low-key restaurants instead to avoid the crowds. I also somehow picked a hotel that while being in the center of everything the city has to offer, wasn't actually in the center of anything I had bookmarked to see or eat at. Despite these things, we had fun being tourists for two days, but we were happy to get back to our apartment and finish out the rest of the weekend in familiar territory. I wouldn't mind doing another short trip like this in the summertime though, when the weather isn't unbearably cold... so perhaps there's another staycation in our future!

The Cat Life - Home Alone

Monday, January 26

We were away for three days and two nights last week, and even though we had some friends check in on Lloyd and Sylvester, they were so happy to see us when we finally got home Saturday afternoon. Cuddles and play time all day! We've left Lloyd alone overnight before, so he knew exactly what was up when he saw us packing. But we hadn't taken any overnight trips since getting Sylvester, so he seemed to be a little cross with us when we got back. It only took a few hours for him to get back to his usual chatty, cuddly self though. But now he knows what packed bags means!

My colleagues (and family) frequently make fun of me for being a cat lady... but you know what? I definitely missed these guys while we were away, and I'm not ashamed to say it! And I'm pretty sure they missed me too. Even if only a little bit.

Project 365, 19-25

Sunday, January 25

19/365

This is my nightly view. Sometimes with a cat at my feet. Most times not.
(Can you tell I almost forgot to take a photo this day?)

20/365

Shawn and I have been trying to "snack healthy"... cheese is healthy, right?

21/365

We finally visited Shawn's mom for a late Christmas, and then we had Chinese food for dinner.
First time in over six years for me! Bring on the sunshine!

22/365

First things first, pork sandwiches at DiNic's.

23/365

A dinosaur with a hat.
(I can't wait to show you guys more photos from the Academy of Natural Sciences!)

24/365

Brews and foods with friends... what else is new?

25/365

I liked the way the light was hitting the yoga studio this morning.

I hope you had an awesome weekend! I'm looking forward to posting about our Philly stay-cation!

Spotted this guy over on Emma's blog... gotta have him!

This moon phase earring set makes me want to get more ear piercings...

The cutest little teapot!

+ Smooshy cats!!!! Lloyd would be such a smoosh if we had a glass table.
+ Speaking of cats, the Brazilians make some pretty awesome cat furniture.
+ The statistics in this article will get into your head. (Actually, they sound low to me!)
+ Most of these are pretty good points.
+ You're not late, you're rude and selfish...
+ What life in space is really like.
+ Gotta make these coffee cake donuts in my new donut pan!!

Happy Friday!!

Broiled Grapefruit

I recently watched my way through every single episode of Good Eats on Netflix. Alton always covers so much in each 20+ minute episode... it's really amazing the amount of history and information he manages to pack in! It makes it easy to re-watch episodes because there's no way I can grasp all of that information in one viewing. One of my favorite episodes is The Ballad of Salty and Sweet... it's my favorite flavor combination, so of course I paid attention to the episode! Surprisingly, he started off talking about grapefruit.

I love grapefruit! But I've always just sprinkled a bit of granulated sugar on top and had at it. Alton explains that in doing this, you're just covering up the bitter fruit with sugar and not actually changing the flavor profile at all. He suggests broiling it and then topping it off with a pinch of salt. I won't go into the science behind it, (for that you can watch the episode), but the salt works to bring everything together into one sweet juicy grapefruity mess.

Broiled Grapefruit

1 ruby red or pink Grapefruit
1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
pinch of sea salt

- Turn on your broiler.
- Slice the grapefruit in half, then use a paring knife to cut around it and between the segments.
- Sprinkle the sugar atop each half, making sure to cover the fruit evenly.
- Leave under the broiler until the sugar is melted and glossy, about 5 minutes.
- Once out of the broiler, sprinkle a pinch of salt over each half, and enjoy!

Try it! I'm never eating grapefruit without broiling it ever again!

The Cat Life - Sunbathing

Tuesday, January 20

Kaylah did such a great job getting Lloyd used to the camera... now if only Sylvester would learn those skills too! Also, I love how fluffy these guys are with the cold weather, but as you can see, Lloyd is a BIG shedder. I definitely can't pick him up once I'm in my work clothes. And if you sit anywhere in the apartment, be prepared to have your butt covered in white fur.
